Winning team installation entry for Calgary's Tactical Urbanism Contest; design build. Kindlenook explores tactical urbanism through the use of simple building materials. The structure draws inspiration from its surroundings, mimicking the playful nature of the fire that it encloses. Kindlenook acts as its own wind barrier while framing the surrounding building views and fireplace to create an interactive seating area accessed from multiple sides. The installation will rethink simple milk crates, utilizing their rigidity to establish and archway that will also act as a robust foundational frame. The structure consists of 172 creates, zip ties, plywood, LED lights and multi-coloured yarn. The provided LED light will be installed at the bottom of the frame to light up the seating area and interact with the coloured yarn threaded through the crates. A diagonal stack of crates shown on the left side of the installation renders acts as an area to place items like coffee cups to shopping bags, offering a dedicated rest area.
