CITY OF A THOUSAND PARKS
The City of a Thousand Parks takes a radical approach in reversing the roles of parks inhabiting cities to the city inhabiting parks. The urban fabric and programming of a thousand parks allows for the city to create a level of pluralism. Influenced by the wild mentha piperita plant, the urban fabric combines the traditional city grid with a rhizome pattern. The fabric melds into its surroundings while integrating change and moments of disruption, and creates a gradient in landform genealogies as well as a gradient between work and leisure. The fabric strategically uses and mitigates river flooding to protect and enhance biodiversity while supporting recreational experiences. The network design creates a pedestrian centered experience, which also allows inhabitants to access the pluralist parks (ie. an art park, disability playground, dog park, etc) within a 15 minute radius. The fabric gradient allows for the gradual widening of network spaces (plaza area) bringing lively spaces of urban pools, markets, and local events to the public. As well as creating a flexible public space to accommodate emergencies such as for refugees/mass migration, becoming a space directed by and for the public. Creating an additional level of park experience through the architectures relationship contributes to the dismantling of an aspect of capitalism by providing access to greenspace to all.
